A Pavement Sign Built to Stay Out

Most pavement signs are plastic A-boards that blow over in the first decent wind and look tired by the second season. This one is a steel frame with a steel swing panel, weighted at the base, designed to be put out every morning and brought in every night for years rather than months.

The panel swings within the frame rather than being fixed to it, which is what lets it take a gust rather than fighting it. Printed on both sides as standard, so it reads from either direction.

Who Uses Pavement Signs

Shops and retail — the classic use. A sign on the pavement catches people who'd otherwise walk straight past a doorway, and it's the cheapest footfall you'll ever buy.

Cafés, pubs and takeaways — daily specials, lunch deals, opening times. A sign outside converts passing trade in a way a window poster doesn't.

Salons, barbers and beauty — walk-in availability, treatment prices, offers. Useful anywhere the business is above ground floor or set back from the street.

Builders and trades on site — a sign at the end of a driveway or at the site entrance tells neighbours who's working there and directs deliveries to the right place. It also does the same job as a site board on jobs too short to justify fixing one up.

Garages, MOT centres and forecourts — pricing, offers and services, positioned where drivers actually see them.

Estate agents — open house days and viewing directions.

Events, markets and car parks — directions, parking instructions, entry points and stall signage.

Sizes

• Small — 430 x 625mm. Suits narrow pavements and doorways where space is tight, or as a secondary sign alongside a larger one.
• Medium — 500 x 750mm. The general-purpose size, and the one most shops settle on.
• Large — 588 x 917mm. Noticeably more presence, and readable from further down the street.
• Extra Large — 674 x 997mm. Forecourts, car parks and roadside positions where the sign needs to carry to passing traffic rather than pedestrians.

Worth thinking about viewing distance rather than just available space. A small sign is fine for someone standing at your door; if you want to catch someone across a road or driving past, go larger.

Frame and Panel

The frame is steel, available in black or white. Black disappears into most street furniture and lets the artwork do the work; white reads brighter and suits lighter branding.

The panel is a steel swing board with rounded corners — rounded because a square corner at head height on a pavement is a genuine hazard, and because they're the first thing to bend on a cheaper sign.

The base is a heavy-duty weighted outdoor base, which provides stability on typical pavement and forecourt surfaces. In persistent high wind, no free-standing pavement sign is entirely secure — bring it in rather than risk it.

Tool-free. The sign assembles by hand in a few minutes and needs nothing beyond that.

Designing a Pavement Sign

Pavement signs are read at walking pace by someone who isn't looking for them, which changes what works.

One message, not five. A sign listing every service you offer communicates nothing at a glance. Pick the thing most likely to stop someone — a price, an offer, or simply what you do.

Big type, strong contrast. Brand colours that look right on a website can vanish against grey paving and grey sky. Contrast is what makes it legible from ten metres.

Both faces get seen by different people. Someone approaching from the left never sees the right-hand face. If your sign is on a two-way street, both sides need to work independently rather than being two halves of one message.

Production takes 2 working days from receipt of artwork. Turnaround covers production only — delivery is on top of that.

UK delivery is £8 per order. Collection from our Burnley production facility is also available.

Will it stay up in wind?
The weighted base gives good stability on normal pavement and forecourt surfaces, and the swinging panel absorbs gusts rather than resisting them. In persistent high wind, bring it inside.

Does it need assembling?
It assembles by hand in a few minutes, with no tools required.

Can I buy a replacement panel?
Not at present. Replacement panels aren't currently available separately.

How much is delivery?
£8 per order. Collection from Burnley is also available.

How long does it take?
2 working days production from receipt of artwork, with delivery on top.
